Uri: The Surgical Strike (movie Review) My ratIng 4/5
Uri is full of josh and will make you joshila. I feel that this movie ranks among the best of this genre (Genre: war; sub-genre: mission-oriented)
The movie tells the story of the Indian Army's surgical strike on terror launch pads on PoK for retaliation of the URI attack through the eyes of Major Vihaan Singh Shergill (Vicky Kaushal). The attack on Uri base camp was beautifully shot and it sort of brings the emotions of the audience to the movie. The scene where Vihaan’s niece gives out a war cry in front her father’s coffin will be etched in my memory for a long time, the was shot beautifully and each actor in that scene was perfect in their expressions and postures, special mention to Vicky the way he stood erect and crisp with tears running down his eyes and half stopping during the war cry as emotions rise within him. This actor is the star find of 2018. The casting was very good and each actor justifies his/her role in the film through solid acting. The climax was handled very aptly by the debutant director Aditya Dhar which brought out the patriotism not through jingoistic dialogues but through sublime acting and body language. The subtle mixing of humane feelings, humor and some dramatic moments helps to achieve the overall patriotic feeling of the film.
Acting wise, the film belongs to Vicky Kaushal. All the actors who portrayed army men in the movie had to train like the army for 3 months at NDA and the effects of this training really show in the film. Vicky as Vihaan delivers a knockout performance by getting into psyche and physicality of the character. When Vihaan tells his men, “How's the josh”, the audience is forced to say “High Sir”. Paresh Rawal as Govind Bharadwaj (a character modeled on Ajit Doval) is brilliant. Yami Gautam and Kirti Kulhari do justice to their roles even though those roles could have been more defined. The surprise factor is Mohit Raina as Captain Karan Kashyap, who delivers a breakthrough performance.
The direction is good, the cinematography is excellent but the editing could have been better. Also, the story could have avoided the personal vendetta agenda in the climax. I don’t think in reality the Army would allow an officer to go to settle his personal scores in a situation that can put his team in danger. This was a silly melodramatic thing that this movie could have avoided.
Overall, this is a must-watch movie for every Indian and anybody who likes a good war

action movie.

"Uri: The Surgical strike"- A fitting tribute to the Indian army.
This may not be the best of the army movies we have had so far, but it surely does not disappoint. Based on the Surgical strike carried out by Indian army in 2016, the movie is indeed a pleasure to watch. It is well paced and keeps you engrossed throughout. Although the story is predictable (since we all have read about the utter successful mission) but the movie still keeps you glued. There are moments which will give goosebumps, make you laugh, will moist your eyes but surely make you feel immensely proud of our national heroes and their capabilities..
In terms of star cast, this has been yet another stellar performance by Vicky Kaushal who seems to be growing from strength to strength..He is brilliant as Major Vihan Singh Shergil and is convincing as both, a ruthless military officer on battle field and a gentleman (caring son, a loving brother) off the field. He has been well supported by Paresh Rawal (as Govind-based on Ajit Doval), Yami Gautam, Mohit Raina and Kirti Kulhari.
The film scores on technical front too. The action sequences have been shot well and the VFX and background score makes it more effective.
This movie however, has it's own set of flaws too. Much more detailing and precison was expected in showcasing the planning and strategizing of the attacks. The actual surgical attack sequences too are shown without any big challenges/hurdles and seem to be too convincing and easy than it actually might have been..
However, inspite of these flaws, this movie is a pleasure to watch and full credit to the debutant director Aditya Dhar for giving us a wonderful start to 2019.
Do go and watch this movie. Am sure, by the time you are out of the movie screens, you would feel the Josh which resonates in the movie and cannot resist but join in echoing the punch line used throughout the movie - "How is the Josh?.....High, Sir..!!"
